Hankinson Out
Montego Bay United will be searching for yet another head coach when the 2018-19 season of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) kicks off later this year as current coach Timothy Hankinson says he will not be back.
The two-time RSPL champions were eliminated from play-offs consideration on Sunday after losing 1-2 to Portmore United at WesPow Park, ending a four season run when they extended their season past the regular season.
Back-to-back losses and three games without a win saw MBU slip from fifth place to ninth on the table as they picked up one point in their last three games.
After fighting back to draw level, but giving up a goal with a minute to go in regulation time, asked after Sunday’s loss, whether he would still be in charge next season, Hankinson gave the Jamaica Observer West a monosyllabic response, “no.”
Hankinson, who is in his second stint with the team, taking over in January at the start of the third round, had earlier described the team as “lacking ambition” and said Sunday after failing to get past a Portmore United team that never got out of second gear, they “are just not good enough right now.”
Under Hankinson, MBU won five of their 12 games, drew four and lost three and scored 16 of their 33 total goals. Prior to his arrival, MBU had won five of their previous 20 games, drew seven and lost eight, while giving up 25 goals.
What were the main issues, Hankinson was asked; “From top to bottom,” he told the Jamaica Observer West, “the attacks were not dangerous enough throughout the third round, and I am sure it was worst in the first and second rounds. The defence letting in sloppy goals,” he lamented.
He said they had let in sloppy goals in a 2-0 loss in their previous game, “We just went through this at Waterhouse. A Waterhouse striker goes up for a corner and he is the only one in the air and gets a clean header, and we talked about it all week since then, about how you have to have a greater desire to get to the ball, to attack the ball and we did it on the first goal and then fell asleep when it is 1-1 at home in front of the home fans.”
In his first stint here at the start of the 2015-16 season, Hankinson had guided the team to seven wins in the first round of the RSPL and set the foundation for their second title in three years.
On Sunday he said the team had not done enough, “I just told the team it’s a simple fact that this team this year probably have more to give from the standpoint of using that talent in a positive way but they didn’t and therefore this team was not good enough.”
