Young Reggae Boyz fall to El Salvador as World Cup dream ends
Jamaica’s hopes of qualifying for this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup were dashed on Saturday when they were defeated 2-1 by El Salvador in their final Group H match in Guatemala. The young Jamaicans, who were seeking to qualify for their third U-17 World Cup, only needing a draw to advance, fell just short in a heartbreaking loss.
The Central Americans took the lead in the 22nd minute through a spectacular 20-yard free-kick which rocketed past the Jamaican goalkeeper. However, Raequan Campbell-Dennis brought the Jamaicans back into contention, scoring the equaliser just three minutes into the second half.
With the game finely poised, Jamaica pushed for the decisive goal, but it was the El Salvadorians who found the winner, scoring 10 minutes from full-time to seal the victory.
With the loss, Jamaica finished second in Group H with six points from three games, while El Salavdor secured the top spot with a perfect nine points. Despite a strong campaign, the young Reggae Boyz fell just short of their World Cup dream, marking a disappointing end to what had been a promising tournament.
