Unearth Dad’s Signature w/ Prince D’Bruce
The art of creating perfumes is not only about blending different notes and creating unique scents but also about discovering an individual’s signature scent. If you’re wondering what Tuesday Style Dryer (TSD) has in store for Father’s Day, think: Bold, limitless, and authentic Jamaican-inspired parfums, Prince D’Bruce Fragrances.
The perfume house principal Edwin Bruce’s parfumeur journey started in 1991 when he migrated to New York to work as a lab technician.
“The fragrance line was conceptualised in 2016, but did not come to fruition until 2021”, shared Bruce with TSD.
” The first fragrance I created for the brand was labelled ‘Chosen’ because I did not choose perfumery, the art chose me through the inspiration of the olfactory experience that came with selling fruits with my mom for our survival. The scents that emanated from the impressive display of fruits made the shoppers smile, salivate and become happy, and so I wanted to find ways to recreate those emotions. Perfumery is a timeless art that has no boundary,” he said.
Acknowledging that perfumery plays an integral role in a person’s signature, Bruce outlined that he takes great pride in trying to identify what his clients’ desires are.”Creating a new fragrance has everything to do with the subjective view of the client in order to express their unique appetite, fantasy and wishes. The balance between creativity and market demand must be achieved through leadership as an artist. As a perfumer, my technical ability positions me to create a desirable menu for the market through the understanding of the demography: Culture, climate, mood, spending habit and emotional needs.
He also outlined that critiques from his customers play an integral role. “Consumer feedback is an important ingredient that must find its place. The fragrances I create are more than a perfume or scent; they are conversation pieces because they say, ‘hello’ in a language that is not spoken by other perfumes. The notes are embellished by the Jamaican spices and herbs, punctuating each layer with the presence of luxury,” he explained.
And like no other, the brand offers a plethora of niche perfumes that pay homage to the island’s culture. “The names of the Prince D’Bruce Fragrances are carefully chosen with the intention of sharing local culture and the inherent beauty of the land, hence the Blu Mountain, A Yah Suh Nice, Goodie, Melanin, etc,” Bruce explained.
Not unlike a fabulous ensemble, a good perfume can boost your confidence and ensure that you get through the day without feeling conscious of body odour. A spray of exquisiteness can work wonders!
