SO2 JUL 9 (PART 1)
Let’s Start With…
If you’ve been keeping up with social media, then at some point you would’ve spotted a Barbie campaign somewhere. From brand collabs to TikTok trends (and even a shortage of pink paint worldwide) the Barbie movie has been taking over the Internet and social spaces as they approach the world premiere, July 20.
And guess who’s up the Barbie alley as well? Jamaican-blooded designer Brandon Blackwood, of course! A custom-made look from Blackwood’s eponymous brand was featured on American rapper Isis “Ice Spice” Gaston. The look was curated by celebrity stylist Marissa Pelly, for a collab Gaston did with Nicki Minaj on a new track, titled Barbie World. The visuals for Barbie World feature Gaston and Nicki Minaj wearing Barbie’s signature pink accompanied by visual effects which reflect the movie’s ultra-feminine theme.
Meanwhile…
Rock-born recording artiste Shenseea is turning Barbie looks of her own.
Shenseea kick-started the first of a series of shows for Captain Morgan x Vita Coco’s Tropical Takeover Tour, performing in Jamaica, Queens, in New York last week, donning an unreleased pink mesh catsuit and taffeta jacket from haute couture womenswear brand Brielle. Shenseea’s Caribbean charm met classic Barbie, and according to Brielle, the entertainer was “giving Barbicore”, as she performed at the Captain Morgan x Vita Coco’s Tropical Takeover Tour.
Captain Morgan and Vita Coco, both beverage companies, teamed up for a series of events, aiming to bring the tropics to several US locations this summer. The two have also produced a new beverage for the tour — Vita Coco Spiked with Captain Morgan — which comes in three flavours: Lime Mojito, Strawberry Daiquiri, and Piña Colada.
Other Caribbean entertainers on the multi-city tour are Sean Paul and Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers.
