Rivaldo Marshall named NJCAA athlete of the week
FORMER Calabar High runner Rivaldo Marshall has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s track athlete of the week for the third time this season after his personal best 2:23.23-minute clocking in the 1000m at the American Track League’s Hawkeye Pro at the Hawkeye Indoor track in Iowa City, Iowa, last weekend.
The Indian Hills Community College sophomore lowered his previous personal best by over four seconds and it was the third-fastest time ever in NJCAA history.
Marshall, who won the NJCAA 800m title last season, had run 1:48.46 minutes in December on a 300m indoor track.
Meanwhile, Kiara Grant of Clemson University, Warren Barrett of Liberty University, and Noxroy Wright were named athletes of the week in their respective conferences on Wednesday.
Grant ranks second in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s 60m after she ran an ACC-record time of 7.09 seconds at the Red Raider Open hosted by Texas Tech. Grant lowered the previous ACC mark of 7.15 that had stood since 2000.
Barrett was winning his second Atlantic Sun Field Athlete of the Week honour after he won the men’s shot put at the Liberty Flames’ Brant Tolsma Invitational with a mark of 19.54m, extending his personal best and school record and also achieving the meet record.
Barrett, who is ranked 10th in the nation and second in the Atlantic Sun Conference, has won three meets in a row.
Wright of Coppin State was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s track athlete of the week after he won the men’s 60m dash at the Carolina Challenge, clocking in at 6.79 seconds, the second-fastest time in the conference this season.
He also posted the MEAC’s fastest mark in 2023 in the 200m, finishing fifth after running 21.30.
