GOLD CUP DREAM
REGGAE Boyz striker Michail Antonio is hoping to replicate his recent trophy success at the club level by helping Jamaica to a historic title at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
The Jamaicans will get their campaign underway tomorrow with a tough clash against the United States at 8:30 pm at Soldier Field in Chicago, in the tournament’s opening match.
They will next face Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday at 6:30 pm at CityPark in St Louis before wrapping up their group assignments against St Kitts and Nevis at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco on Sunday, July 2 at 6:00 pm.
Antonio was instrumental for English Premier League club West Ham, scoring six goals in nine matches in the UEFA Europa Conference League for the Hammers who defeated Fiorentina 2-1 in the final to lift their first major trophy in 43 years and their first European title since 1965.
Losses in the 2015 and 2017 finals represent Jamaica’s best showing at the Gold Cup in 14 previous appearances in the region’s premier competition and Antonio, who has scored three goals in his seven Reggae Boyz matches so far, is hoping to play a leading role for the Boyz as they hunt their first hold on the Gold Cup.
“It’s been good, to be fair. The spirit seems high, we seem quite confident, training has been going on well, and I am feeling positive. I have one cup already and I am here for a second,” Antonio said.
“It hasn’t — I know I have won, I have the medal at home — but it just doesn’t feel like [I won the UEFA Conference League]. It hasn’t set in yet but I am here and I am hoping to win another [trophy with Jamaica].”
Jamaica also finished third at the 1993 Gold Cup tournament and had fourth-place finishes in 1998 and 2019.
The Jamaicans were eliminated at the quarter-final stage at the last installment but Antonio, 33, expressed confidence in the quality of the team heading into the competition, reporting that the players were in high spirits as they prepared for their opening test.
“One thing I know is that I definitely enjoy coming here with the lads. Obviously we have a good bond now; the atmosphere and camaraderie, everything is quite good here. I am enjoying it and we are going to keep going,” he said.
“The Jamaica team has a lot of potential and a lot of quality out there, and people are starting to turn up. Obviously there are quite a few Premier League players now — Demarai Gray, Bobby Reid, Ethan Pinnock, [Leon] Bailey — there are quality players here but it’s not just the Premier League players, there are a lot of quality players naturally from the island itself,” added Antonio.
Antonio has scored 61 goals in 228 matches for West Ham, which he has represented since 2015.
