Mona High student empowered through digital connectivity
In today’s world, digital access creates opportunities for all demographics of society. Children can remove geographical limitations to immerse themselves in a foreign culture; the elderly can reconnect with old friends and revel in a bit of nostalgia.
For Chad Lorne, digital access means getting his hands on research information needed to complete his studies as an Upper Six student at Mona High School in St Andrew.
Lorne was recently gifted a Dell Chromebook from the Flow Foundation to support his academic pursuits of completing high school and advancing to study politics. He says he’s drawn to politics because of the impact it has on people.
“I choose representational politics because I love helping people in whatever ways or means possible,” Lorne said. “I want to ensure that people get good representation and I want to help people better their lives.”
Similarly, Lorne pointed out that the internet has a tremendous impact on people and that he is inspired by the digital economy because of its power to unite.
“The biggest benefit I think the internet gives to society is communication and networking that brings people together from all parts of the world,” he added.
As it relates to how he uses the internet and his new device to support his schooling, Lorne stated: “The laptop will support my research on different subjects, login into online classes and to watch tutorial videos of the subjects I’m doing in school, which will then deepen my understanding of the theories.”
Lorne comes from a humble background but is driven to overcome the odds as he is fuelled by the memory of his late mother.
“My mother is my biggest motivation in life,” he says proudly. “Even though she is no longer on earth, making her proud remains at the centre of my life.”
As part of its commitment to enabling the progress of Jamaicans through digital inclusion, the Flow Foundation supports several schools, communities and organisations with digital devices and internet connectivity towards building a robust digital economy.
