‘Super blessed’ Hibbert presses for triple jump medal
PARIS, France — National senior representative Jaydon Hibbert will look to continue Jamaica’s historic medal success in the field events at the Olympic Games when he competes in the final of the men’s triple jump at the Stade de France.
Action in the final is set to begin 1:10 this afternoon Jamaica time.
Jamaica, enjoying its best-ever showing in field events at the Olympic Games, has already secured four medals off the track, comprising one gold, two silver, and one bronze.
Roje Stona won gold in the men’s discus; Shanieka Ricketts and Wayne Pinnock claimed silver in the women’s triple jump and men’s long jump, respectively; and Rajindra Campbell earned bronze in the men’s shot put.
Hibbert, who has a season’s best of 17.75m, has been struggling with a slight knee injury this season. He enters the men’s triple jump final with the sixth-best jump of 16.99m from the qualifying round on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Hibbert, who will be competing in his second senior final of his career, said he aims to deliver an excellent performance for his country.
“I am so grateful, and I want to thank God because not many people can call themselves an Olympic finalist, and I am one of them, especially at my premature age,” he told the
Jamaica Observer. “I am super blessed, especially looking back — the past two months have been rough, but I’ve conquered the adversities so far, and I am going out there on Friday to give my all.”
Hibbert noted that he expects the final to be highly competitive, but he is confident in his ability to bring home a medal for Jamaica.
“I am just expecting myself to do my best, and everything else is a bonus. Once I do my best, I am pretty good with that. Obviously, I want to win, so on Friday, I am going out there to do my best, and hopefully, my best wins. I am gunning for the medal, and I am sure everybody else is too, so whoever wants it more will win it,” Hibbert added.
