Swamp residents afraid after mechanic’s murder
MONEAGUE, St Ann — The usually incident-free community of Swamp in Moneague, St Ann, was jolted by the fatal shooting of 50-year-old auto electrician Dwight Abrahams on Tuesday night. The incident took place about 9:30 pm at a bar in the area.
According to police reports, two men travelling in a gold-coloured car carried out the attack. Abrahams was shot, robbed of cash and his black Toyota Wish motor car. The police were alerted and he was taken to the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) camp in Moneague and then transported to the hospital in a JDF ambulance. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
The deceased’s brother, journalist Kirk Abrahams, took to social media platform Twitter to express his grief.
“Heartbroken and torn. Gunmen snuffed out the life of my brother last night in a carjacking in St Ann. And this one was the quietest of us. I can’t even process it properly this is too much man. All for a car,” he said.
The incident has left residents in shock as they never expected criminals to strike in their peaceful community. One man, who asked not to be identified, told the Jamaica Observer the area has been tense since the incident.
“Me a tell you seh right now everybody afraid because these things nuh happen up yah. So to hear that man come in the community and do that, everybody a guh just scared to even walk at nights yah now,” he said.
An elderly woman who only gave her name as Maybell decried the killing.
“Me nuh know a wah this come gwaan, God know. Even if them did rob the man… take the car and leave him. But them take him life in cold blood, so wicked man,” she told the Observer.
The parish of St Ann has recorded 17 murders as of May 27, three less than those committed in the corresponding period last year.
The parish’s senior superintendent in charge of policing, Dwight Powell is urging anyone with information that can help their investigation to contact the police.
