Successful new year treat inspires cop to do more
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — Still in high spirits from the cheers and laughter of residents who turned out for a new year treat on Tuesday, deputy superintendent of police in charge of operations in St Ann, Kevin Francis, plans to do more community outreach events in 2023.
“This is our way of bridging the gap and getting closer to our communities whilst encouraging partnership between the community and the police. So far, we have warmed the hearts of persons we have interacted with and created even greater relationships and bonds,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
He and four of his colleagues from the division worked with four members of the We Care Society to get the year off to a cheerful start for residents of Belle Air and Pimento Walk in Runaway Bay, as well as Beecher Town and other surrounding areas. Adults received care packages stacked with food items and toiletries while the children were given bags with toys and snacks.
“We the police are your friends and we realise that there can be greater initiative once we partner in this area to bring about some form of stability and impact the lives of those we interact with,” Francis explained.
Belle Air resident Sharon Perry was among those who were impressed by the treat.
“I feel so good about the fact that they take time out to give back, especially to the children. I could see on their face that they were excited about the presents and to be around the police,” she told the Observer.
Another resident who only identified himself as Teddy is looking forward to more of these events where the police interact with residents.
“We nuh just want [to] see them when anything bad happen enuh, we want them to come in more regular and bond with the kids them because them need the guidance. But mi happy for what mi see go on; it is a good look,” he said.
He is on the same page as DSP Francis.
“I do believe that gatherings like this, the care packages, interaction with the police especially for the kids is needed. We will continue to work to ensure that we have safer communities across the parish of St Ann,” the lawman promised.
