St James man awaits sentencing for stabbing baby
A St James man accused of assaulting a mother before stabbing her two-year-old baby with a pair of scissors will learn on May 19 if a court-ordered social enquiry report will have any impact on his sentencing.
Seymour Williams, 22, who is without legal representation, appeared in the St James Parish Court last Friday to face wounding and possession of an offensive weapon charges.
According to the prosecution’s case file, on December 22 about 2:00 pm the complainant was standing on St James Street with her child when she felt someone hit her. She turned around and saw the accused man, who stabbed the infant with a pair of scissors and remarked, “It naah go so.”
“Why did you do it?” presiding parish Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley asked.
“Mi just come back from prison and I was feeling angry,” the accused man told the judge.
Williams said he was also hearing voices and that he had sought psychiatric help in the past.
He further disclosed that he served a year in prison for chopping someone and that his family did not want him around.
However, when the judge asked him if he would accept responsibility for his actions, he said, “Yes.”
Smith-Ashley then requested a social enquiry report and postponed sentencing until May 19.
Williams was remanded in custody.
