Sandals experts share insights with future tourism leaders
IN a bid to inspire youngsters and promote the idea of sustainable tourism investment, managers from Sandals Ochi Beach Resort took to the classrooms of Marcus Garvey Technical High, Iona High, and Ocho Rios High schools during Tourism Awareness Week (September 24-30).
The overarching theme of their presentations was ‘Tourism and Green Investments — investing in people, planet and prosperity’.
Carol Bourke, general manager of Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, delivered an engaging talk at Ocho Rios High School, igniting a passionate discussion about prioritising and upscaling skills among the students.
“Investing in our people is not just about providing jobs, it’s about nurturing talents and creating pathways to success within the tourism industry,” said Burke.
At Iona High School, Regional Public Relations Manager Lyndsay Isaacs seamlessly connected the dots between tourism and the environmental projects undertaken by Sandals Foundation and the environment, health and safety department at the resort.
“Our commitment to the planet is unwavering. It’s not just about conserving, it’s about regenerating. Our collaboration today with Jamaica Tourist Board and the Forestry Department has allowed us to plant ornamental and fruit trees, symbolising the growth and harmony between nature and tourism,” said Isaacs.
In the meantime Gary Holgate, hotel manager, led a dynamic session at Marcus Garvey Technical High School, focusing on the economic aspect of tourism. He shared insights into how investing in prosperity can foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Sustainable tourism investments are not just about financial gains — they’re about building a sustainable future. By providing opportunities and support we encourage our youth to become innovators and entrepreneurs in the tourism sectors.” He told his audience of teachers and students.
The students were clearly inspired by the presentations, with many expressing their eagerness to contribute to the sustainable growth of the tourism industry. The managers from Sandals not only imparted valuable knowledge but also sowed the seeds of inspiration and responsibility, ensuring that the future of Jamaica tourism is bright and sustainable.
Following each presentation a student from each school expressed their gratitude. Jose Brown from Iona High School, who delivered the vote of thanks for the informative and knowledgeable presentation, remarked, “We’re truly inspired by the holistic approach to sustainable tourism investments. This presentation has opened our eyes to the incredible potential in the tourism industry, not just for our careers but for the betterment of our planet and our community.”
