‘Revisiting the foundation’ through Read Across Jamaica Day
The saying goes “Reading maketh a full man” and on Tuesday adults across the island paused to sit with children and read to mark Read Across Jamaica Day, celebrated under the theme ‘Revisiting the foundation’.
Observed as part of Education Week and Child Month, Read Across Jamaica Day is aimed at promoting the significance of reading and literacy locally.

Though blind from birth, grade seven student Aleria Bent reads fluently to NCB’s Constant Spring Financial Centre Manager Maxine McKenzie and her fellow students during Read Across Jamaica Day on Tuesday. NCB also donated $100,000 towards the purchasing of braille machines with their grade two students.

Sagicor Life Financial Advisor Ancella Brown-Hardware reads with third-grade students at Crescent Primary School in St Catherine on Read Across Jamaica Day. The Sagicor Foundation gifted storybooks and note books to the students, as well as a new whiteboard for their classroom.

Audrey Tugwell Henry (right), president and CEO of the Scotia Group, spends time reading to grade 3 students at Central Branch All-Age School on Slipe Pen Road in Kingston yesterday morning. The school was among 15 others across the island that were visited by representatives from the bank in observation of Read Across Jamaica Day. Each school received Sangster’s book vouchers to assist with the expansion of the reading materials available at the school.
