No horse in the race
ISLINGTON, St Mary — Outgoing Member of Parliament for St Mary Central Dr Morais Guy has opted to stay above the fray in the process to find his successor within the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP), unwilling to give either contender his support when party delegates vote on July 9.
“I don’t want anybody to go around and say that MP support me or support my candidate,” he declared during a recent gathering of comrades at the Islington Division conference.
The contenders are Dr Floyd Morris, Jamaica’s first blind senator, and Omar Newell, a former head of PNP affiliate The Patriots.
While Dr Guy said he believes both are worthy competitors, he urged comrades in the constituency to make their own decision about who they want to represent them when the next general election is called by the ruling Jamaica Labour Party.
The PNP’s ongoing selection of candidates has been stormy in several constituencies as the party hierarchy attempts to put in place what it considers a winning team. Some comrades have been left disgruntled, however, as long-serving workers have been bypassed.
Guy has been representing the constituency since October 2002.
