New police stations for St Ann; others to be rehabilitated
OCHO RIOS, St Ann – Pointing to the need to have facilities that are in line with ongoing efforts to digitise the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang has promised new police stations for St Ann and upgrades to a number of others within the parish.
“All the police stations along this coastline, Cave Valley, further up in the hills require a new station. We are in the process of getting that done… But we are committed to ensure, under our programme, that the police has quality work stations,” he said during a tour in St Ann last Saturday.
“The police stations are professional work facilities, police job is a professional job; they need the kind of space to work that they can work effectively,” the minister said.
“We are putting in place the digitisation programme which is to bring in computers throughout the system. That, too, requires a station that is differently organised than they used to be,” Dr Chang added.
He pointed out that attention would have to be paid to issues such as Internet connectivity, the temperature of the facilities housing computer servers, and other issues specific to a more digitally focused JCF.
“All of that generates the motivation to ensure that all our stations are in order, and we’re getting there. St Ann will have connectivity during the latter part of this year and, therefore, present a much better front to the wider public,” he said.
In May, the JCF staged a four-day expo at which it unveiled technical skills that impressed many attendees. The event offered insight into how the force’s quality management systems and technology are revolutionising policing in Jamaica.
Among the demonstrations were a staged crime scene in which police personnel demonstrated how technology is used to analyse the evidence and solve the crime.
Patrons also saw JamaicaEye in operation, how the police use drones, how the smart system which allows for electronic ticketing works, body cameras at work, the use of facial recognition technology in real time, live demonstrations of a search and rescue, and a police dog’s recovery of drugs and firearms.
Speaking on the opening day, Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted the three-fold increase in the JCF’s capital budget over the last eight years, saying it represents the Government’s commitment to national security.
Saturday’s tour by Minister Chang, which began at the Discovery Bay Police Station, also took him and his team to the Runaway Bay Station, then to St Ann’s Bay, and ended at the Ocho Rios Police Station.
Dr Chang was accompanied by Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson, along with head of the St Ann Police Division Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, among other police personnel.
