JTA spruces up four schools for Labour Day
FOUR schools received much-needed facelifts on Monday as part of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association’s annual Labour Day activities.
The schools, Rose Hall Primary and Infant School in St Elizabeth, Clifton Primary School in St Andrew, Lewisburgh Primary and Infant School in St Mary, and Content Primary School in Westmoreland each benefited from approximately $500,000 in renovations and laptops.
President of the JTA Winston Smith told the Jamaica Observer that the four schools were chosen this year as they were usually overlooked duee to being located in deep-rural areas.
“I made sure to go for schools that were multi-grades but they need the help and they are offering good education to our children and community, so we make sure that we give them the help that they need. The schools were chosen by the executive of each regional committee, guided by the regional office,” he said.
“As a past student of the Rose Hall Primary and Infant School, I made the journey there to facilitate the refurbishing of the school’s canteen. In addition, I also donated a laptop computer to help with the teaching and learning process at the school,” he added, pointing out that painting and tiling were also a part of the day’s activities at the institution.
Smith also noted that he was pleased with the support given at the schools towards the project.
“Things are going very well. Parents, regional officers, secretary general are very much involved. It has been a good day’s work. It is one way the JTA seeks to help to improve the lives of teachers and students outside of the association’s regular activities,” said Smith.
Meanwhile, the scope of work at Clifton Primary School included painting of walls, rails and murals. At Lewisburgh Primary and Infant School, work included the paving of the driveway and beautification of the grounds.
At Content Primary School columns were constructed, there was the installation of a gate, painting of walls, the replacing of some desks for teachers, and beautification of the grounds.
