Falmouth mayor bemoans decline in volunteerism
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Mayor of Falmouth and chairman of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation C Junior Gager is decrying a noticeable decline of volunteerism following the low turnout of individuals to participate in the beautification of Water Square Falmouth, Monday’s Labour Day parish project.
A handful of volunteers joined members of the municipal corporation to successfully complete the beatification project in the heart of the town.
“… Voluntarism is hard to come by these days but we are working with [who we have] and we are making sure that we achieve the goal,” Mayor Gager told members of the media Monday morning.
“We are concentrating on Water Square, making sure that the municipal building is spick and span and that the town is clean too, as we are washing and painting some areas.
He argued that a programme will be put in place to maintain the cleanliness of the town.
He warned that following the cleaning of the town measures will be taken to eliminate illegal vending in the area.
“We will be moving to maintain this cleanliness because you will be seeing some actions too where we will be removing some of the sellers in the square to make sure they abide in the place designated for them. Once we set the order today (Monday) we want that to continue,” Gager said
In fact, the Falmouth mayor said the Labour Day project was the build-up to more substantial beautification projects to mark the ‘Jamaica 60’ celebrations.
“Most projects are coming…so it will be a continuation of what is happening now,” said Gager.
Meanwhile, for their Labour Day project, members of the Trelawny Parish Development Committee painted the counselling centre at Granville Child Care facility.
“It really needed painting, especially now that this month we are focusing on children and we really need a nice space for them to speak,” Garland McDonald, interim president of the parish development committee, told the Jamaica Observer. Funding for this project came out of a prayer breakfast.
Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force also gave the Falmouth Police Station a facelift on Labour Day.
