ACPJ to host ‘Sleep, Health and Wellness’ symposium
The Association of Consultant Physicians of Jamaica (ACPJ) has steadily contributed to the advancement of medical knowledge among physicians locally and on Sunday, September 10, 2023, will celebrate its 21st symposium anniversary under the theme ‘Sleep, Health and Wellness’.
Annually, the ACPJ organises educational meetings attended by local, regional and international physicians. The symposium brings First-World Continuing Medical Education (CME) to improve the quality of health care delivered to patients, and plays a key role in moulding and inspiring young minds entering the profession. The symposium will facilitate conversations surrounding sleep disorders, non-drug therapies, mental and physical health, from specially invited physicians.
Professor of psychology and neurology at the University of Miami, Professor Girardin Jean-Louis has been tasked with delivering the Wilbert Jeffrey-Smith Wilson Memorial Lecture, ‘Sleep and Circadian Health Equity to Improve Cardiovascular and Mental Health’. This symposium is integral in providing evidence-based information and world standard management guidance of patients.
ACPJ President Dr Karen Phillips expressed gratitude that “the association has been able to maintain the tradition of hosting yet another amazing event. There is still a lot to be done to improve the standards of health care locally and we are glad to be able to play our part. This weekend will see expert speakers coming together at our symposium to discuss the topic of sleep, which is often overlooked but is very important in the maintenance of physical and mental health.”
Additionally, as part of its contribution to the medical field, the ACPJ will be hosting a fund-raising event to aid in upgrading the facilities of the UWI, Mona Medical Sciences Computer Lab. Slated for September 9, 2023 at The Grand Ballroom, Jamaica Pegasus hotel, the banquet will precede this year’s symposium. Attendees will be regaled with an ‘Evening of Music, Art & Fashion’, commencing at 6 pm, as they anticipate the following day’s activity.
“In place of our usual annual banquet, we will be hosting ‘Melodies and Masterpieces’, a pre-symposium cocktail reception featuring music from some outstanding medical colleagues, amazing fashion and stellar art. We are particularly happy to be donating part proceeds from this event to the Computer and Simulation Laboratory at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Medical School. This facility will allow us to offer up-to-date teaching methodologies that will keep us on the cutting edge and allow less fortunate students to have access to basic resources,” Phillips added.
