ST JAMES, Jamaica — It was a sombre start to the new school year at Howard Cooke Primary School in Montego Bay as the institution continues to mourn last week’s sudden death of its vice principal, Veronica Headley Jennings.

On Monday morning, teachers and students were encouraged to observe a minute of silence as they reflected on time spent with Headley Jennings. Members of the Ministry of Education and guidance counsellors are at the school to offer counselling to those who need it.
In leading the school’s devotion on Monday, principal Dave Scott spoke fondly of the woman who devoted 33 years of her professional career to the institution.
Scott, who was set to head off on vacation starting September 1, noted that these plans have now been cancelled with the death of Headley Jennings, who had been designated to act as principal for eight months.
Headly Jennings died suddenly on August 28.
