WATCH: NEPA investigating oil spill in Rio Cobre
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) said it is investigating an oil spill in the Rio Cobre.
In a news release Tuesday, NEPA said it received a report of the oil spill in the Bog Walk Gorge about 5pm Monday and dispatched a team immediately to the area to do an assessment.
It said its probe revealed the source of the spill as coming from a factory operating in the area.
“NEPA has since met with the company’s management team who is cooperating with the agency to undertake the necessary clean-up exercise. NEPA has reached out to Petrojam for assistance in this regard and they have agreed to provide the necessary resources to extract the oil and to prevent its movement further downstream,” the agency said.
At the time of the release, NEPA said the oil was in the vicinity of the Bog Walk Bridge, adding that “every effort is being made to rectify the situation.”
It also released a video showing the oil pollution of the Rio Cobre as a result of the spill. It is just the latest pollution of the river.
