WATCH: ‘I have nothing’ – More than 30 homeless after fire destroys nine homes in Kingston
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Despite her concerns when she saw her son rushing towards her at her vending stall in downtown Kingston on Friday morning, the last thing on Sharon’s mind was that her house –with all her worldly possessions – was being gutted by fire.
However, the unthinkable happened.
Sharon, a market vendor, has been left to pick up the pieces after her two-bedroom, fully-furnished dwelling on West Street was destroyed by fire.
“The way I am traumatised, I don’t know what to say. My son run come tell me that fire all bout. That’s how me run come round, and (I saw) pure blazing fire.”
Sharon said she was unable to salvage any of her belongings and estimated the value of her loss at approximately $300,000, while her mother, she said, has lost over $1 million in valuables.
“I couldn’t take out anything, I couldn’t save anything at all. Nothing at all mi save,” a distressed Sharon told OBSERVER ONLINE.
“Everything burn up. Mi mother tings dem, mi brother tings dem. Is my daughter wake up my brother, [before] a bulk a fire come down on him on the bed. As him get up off the bed, a bulk a fire just come down on him,” she said.
Reports are that the fire, which had spread from Matthew’s Lane to West Street, started sometime around 8:00 am. Over 30 people, including children, have been left homeless. Nine houses in total were affected.

Sharon speculated that the fire could have been caused by a number of wires attached to the roofs of the houses in the yards.
Meanwhile, another victim, nicknamed Cherry, returned from a doctor’s visit to see the half-burnt remains of her home. In an instant, she fell to the floor in agony and screamed, “Mi don’t work anywhere and mi nuh have nothing. All mi TV gone.”
Some residents were able to rescue appliances such as a stoves, microwave and refrigerators, while some were seen walking with a few clothing items in hand. Others, like Sharon, were left with nothing.
District Officer of the York Park Fire Station, Maveta Bailey-Hall, indicated that that there were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the blaze and that the cause of the fire is not immediately known.
“Upon arrival at this location, several dwelling rooms were on fire. Two medium jets were put into operation to combat the blaze. We got it under control shortly after. Several residents are affected. Some [houses] completely destroyed, some partially destroyed,” Bailey- Hall said.
She added that investigations are ongoing.
