WATCH: Controversy surrounds Jess’ PNP vice-president nomination
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The People’s National Party (PNP) is facing another controversy, this time surrounding the nomination of Central Clarendon caretaker Zuleika Jess as vice president.
Jess along with busloads of supporters turned up at the PNP headquarters Thursday to officially throw her hat in the ring for one of the four vice president positions in the party, but had to wait several hours before her nomination was accepted pending a deliberation among executives at an emergency meeting.
“According to our general secretary, her nomination has been accepted and the executive will meet to deliberate and then we will get further notice on that,” Dennis Atkins, councillor caretaker of the Mocho division and a Jess supporter, told OBSERVER ONLINE.
The nominees for the VP positions so far are Senator Donna Scott Mottley; Manchester North Western MP, Mikael Phillips; Spanish Town Mayor, Norman Scott; and former Hanover Western MP, Ian Hayles.
A Jess supporter told OBSERVER ONLINE that party executives are concerned that Jess’ candidacy could potentially displace a loyalist of party president Mark Golding from the slate of VPs.
Scott and Hayles are believed to be loyal to Golding.
OBSERVER ONLINE understands that party executives are now locked in an emergency meeting discussing Jess’ candidacy.
