WATCH: 10-y-o Christiyana Martin wins silver for Jamaica in gymnastics
The exploits of standout 10-year old gymnast Christiyana Martin –the daughter of entertainers Ce’Cile and Christopher Martin –earned Jamaica its only medal in the level two category at the recently held 2022 Pan American Gymnastics Union (PAGU) Games in Melgar, Colombia.
Martin and her teammate Emelia Sharpe represented their country for the second year in a row at the PAGU Games and made their presence felt following their participation in the El Salvador version of the competition which was held last year.
Martin won silver after stepping up to compete in the level two category this year. Last year she had competed in level one of the games and won two gold and two bronze medals.
Sharpe also represented Jamaica at the championships and was the only level three gymnast to compete.
Martin’s silver medal exploits helped Jamaica to place 4th in the level two team category, just falling short of achieving the four points which were required to beat Puerto Rico for the third place team podium spot.
The Jamaica level one team copped four medals in total.
Martin has been a member of the Nishidas Gymnastics group for over six years, and trains at least four days per week for four hours per day, while balancing school and starting her own small business where she makes bracelets.
“Level two is a tougher version of the event and the truth is Christiyana and the team’s performance is worthy of commendation. Christiyana’s kindness, courage and determination to do everything she sets her mind to is very motivating to watch by her coaches, teammates, family and friends,” Team Jamaica’s management team said.
Christiyana is the daughter of reggae singer Christopher Martin and dancehall artiste Cecile.
