Verbal clash at start of PNP run-off in St Elizabeth NE
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Voting has begun at the St Elizabeth High School in Santa Cruz for a run-off between two aspirants to determine who will get the nod to represent the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) in St Elizabeth North Eastern for the next parliamentary election.
Chairman of the PNP’s Region Five Kern Spencer and lawyer Zuleika Jess are vying to represent the party in the constituency. There are 1,274 delegates eligible to vote during the internal election that started at 9:00 am and is expected to end at 3:00 pm.
There were tense scenes outside the STETHS entrance as supporters of Jess and Spencer verbally clashed.
One accused the other of being a part of corruption, to which the other responded, “mi never get charge yet”.
A woman soon intervened, appealing to the men to quell their anger.
“We don’t want nuh aggression. We don’t want any quarrel out here. Relax yourself. Let the people vote for who they want. See the Observer deh suh,” she said.
