Three children perish in early morning fire in Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Three children, ages eight, six, and one, died when they were trapped inside their burning home at Mocha, East Bank Demerara in Guyana on Thursday morning.
According to the island’s Fire Chief Gregory Wickham, the Guyana Fire Service received reports of the blaze at around 1:25 am. Two fire tenders were dispatched soon after, however, because of the condition of the road leading to the house, firemen had difficulty reaching the burning building.
It is reported that firemen had to go to the house on foot.
Additionally, Wickham said, the house was located “way down into the back of the village so the closest neighbour was some distance and was not able to do any rescue”.
He said the circumstances surrounding the fire were still being ascertained.
“As of now, we are only able to give account that the children died,” the fire chief said.
