Temporary traffic signal installed following fatal St James collision
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Four days after a stoplight was destroyed during a crash that left two people dead, the National Works Agency (NWA) has installed a temporary replacement at the Providence and Ironshore main road intersection in Montego Bay.
On April 29, hotel workers Tiana Dixon and Akeem Gardiner were severely injured after the vehicle in which they were travelling veered into the traffic signal. They later succumbed to their injuries.
“The road furniture can be replaced but in the case of loss of life, that can’t be replaced. Accidents do have a tremendous impact on the road furniture but when you look at the other side of it, it’s a tremendous loss of life,” said NWA community relations officer for the western region, Janel Ricketts.
On Monday night, there was another double fatality in St James, this time along the Bogue main road.
The deceased, both of Ramble Hill in the parish, have been identified as 24-year-old Collin Graham and 34-year-old Lionel Duhaney.
Reports are that the crash took place about 10:30 pm when Graham lost control of the Toyota Allion motor car he was driving and hit the median.
The car then slammed into a utility pole, overturned, and broke through the perimeter fencing that surrounds the community of Bogue Village.
It is theorised that excessive speeding may have been a factor.
