STGC, KC looking to turn screws in Group A
St George’s College (STGC) and Kingston College (KC) will be looking to turn the screws in Group A of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup competition when they take on Waterford and Meadowbrook High, respectively, today.
STGC leads the group by a goal difference, having won their first two games by a combined 14 goals without conceding.
The North Street-based side will be going for win number three at the expense of a Waterford team that have picked up four points from their first two encounters with four goals for and one against.
Whilst Waterford are no pushovers, the rejuvenated STGC team are proving to be a goal-scoring machine and the St Catherine-based school will be hard-pressed to keep out Brian Burkett and company.
After an admitted dismal season last term, STGC have put all their troubles behind them and is quickly establishing itself as one of the front runners for this year’s title.
The team has matured significantly, and it has been seen in their play so far, with coach Neville “Bertis” Bell expecting more of the same plays today.
However, Waterford will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition and will be doing their best to repel the efforts of the “Light Blues”. A draw would see them maintain the third spot in the group, but they will no doubt be looking for more than that at home.
Meanwhile, KC sits second in the group and will be looking to add to the misery of Meadowbrook, who sits at the foot of the table on zero points and a goal difference of -11.
The chances of an upset are very unlikely when the boys in blue and green head to the expansive Stadium East Field.
KC will be looking to Dujuan Richards, who already has four goals and Jaheem Johnson, who is yet to get off the mark, to enhance their goal tally, since winning the group could come down to goal difference.
After bagging five goals on the opening day against Calabar and scoring just two against a defensively organised Ardenne team, KC will be looking to “go to town” against a porous Meadowbrook defence that conceded all of eight goals against STGC last week.
Calabar High have not had the desired start to the campaign under the guidance of experienced coach Andrew Price, and with just one point from their first two games, are in danger of being cut adrift early.
They are, however, still in control of their fate at the moment and will be looking to register their first win at the expense of the point-less Ardenne High. Calabar will be playing their first game at home this season with the hopes that being at Red Hills Road can be a catalyst to spur their first win this season.
Calabar have scored two goals so far whilst their opponents are yet to score a goal. Ardenne, however, are working on the defensive side of their game and have conceded just two goals in their last three halves of football after conceding six in the very first.
They are growing from strength to strength as a defensive unit and will be hoping to blunt the Calabar attack to secure their first win of the season. Stopping Calabar is not beyond Ardenne’s reach and this game is expected to be a close and keen contest.
In Group B, Jamaica College (JC), who were held to a draw by St Catherine High last time out, will be looking to get back to winning ways at the expense of Holy Trinity High when they travel to the Bell Chung Oval.
Holy Trinity has one win from two games and will see JC as a target themselves. A win over JC will see them leapfrog their opponents into third place in the group and this should provide enough motivation to go for the win at home.
The other two teams in the group are Cedar Grove Academy and St Mary’s College. They will face each other and are yet to secure a point this season.
The other matches on tap today are:
Group D
Spanish Town High v Norman Manley High @ Prison Oval 3:30 PM
STATHS v Jonathan Grant High @ STATHS 3:30 PM
