Reggae Girlz out of next year’s CONCACAF W Gold Cup
The Reggae Girlz will not be participating in next year’s inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup after their 1-1 draw with hosts Guatemala today which ruled them out of a spot in the playoffs.
The Jamaican women, who needed to win to advance, found themselves behind early after defender Lauren Reid conceded a penalty which Ana Lucia Martinez converted in the 10th minute.
The Girlz found the equaliser in the 65th minute with Davia Richards sliding the ball under the onrushing goalkeeper Alexia Estrada.
Despite a flurry of late attacking changes, the Xavier Gilbert led team were unable to find a winner.
The result means second-placed Guatemala on five points advance to the playoffs next February ahead of the Jamaicans who finished bottom of the group on three points.
The local delegation of the Reggae Girlz are expected to arrive on the island tomorrow afternoon.
