Public order warning issued for vendors, taxi/bus operators in Westmoreland
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Taxi operators and vendors in Westmoreland are expected to be under added restrictions this morning in the commercial town of Savanna-La-Mar. This follows a warning from the Westmoreland Police and the Municipal Corporation.
Both parties say they are working together to restore public order in the parish.
Head of the Westmoreland Police Division, Senior Superintendent Wayne Josephs, made the announcement at Thursday’s sitting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation meeting.
“We have plans afoot to take back the town. As I’ve always said, if you cannot control the town, then you cannot control the parish,” SSP Josephs stressed.
SSP Josephs said the campaign will be focused on illegal vending and taxi/bus operators that are not complying with the rules.
“If we cannot control our town, then we cannot control the parish, so we intend to restore public order and we will be targeting illegal vending, [and] the taxis and buses.
Illegal vending and traffic violations have been the order of the day in the town.
SSP Josephs also sought to address delivery trucks that are providing service outside of schedule.
“And the delivery trucks that are delivering outside of scheduled hours, we also will be targeting you,” SSP Josephs cautioned.
“This is the start of the warning for persons who are in breach of these rules,” he added.
SSP Josephs noted that the Christmas season is fast approaching and the police will be out in “full force”.
