Popcaan sues Gov’t for defamation
Dancehall artiste Popcaan, whose birth name is Andrae Sutherland, has filed a defamation suit against the Government of Jamaica over allegations made in a police press release of a drug-related conviction and arrest of the ‘Unruly Boss’ in Barbados.
The suit was filed Friday in the Supreme Court by prominent attorney-at-law Bert Samuels of the law firm Knight, Junior & Samuels. The attorney general is named as the defendant.

According to the claim, the Jamaica Constabulary Force on July 6 “falsely, maliciously and/or without reasonable or probable cause published and/or caused to be published…” a press release in which defamatory words were made of Sutherland in relation to an alleged marijuana conviction and cocaine arrest of the entertainer in Barbados.
The suit states that Sutherland has never been arrested in Barbados or any other place for possession of cocaine and his conviction in relation to marijuana was expunged in the eastern Caribbean island.
Sutherland is claiming general damages, damages for defamation, interest, legal costs and any further relief that the court may deem fit.
The JCF had issued the release in response to allegations by Sutherland that the Government of Jamaica placed a stop order against the entertainer resulting in him being detained in the UK.
