No evidence offered against security guard who assaulted elderly man
A restorative justice process was employed on Wednesday to resolve the case of a security guard who was alleged to have assaulted an elderly man.
Stephen Plummer, who was facing charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful wounding, appeared before presiding parish judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley.
The incident occurred on April 22 when the complainant placed his goods on the pavement outside a supermarket on St James Street, according to court documents.
It is alleged that Plummer told the complainant to remove the items, but the complainant refused. Plummer then proceeded to punch the complainant all over his body, including his head, causing a wound to one of his ears.
Following the reading of the allegations, Smith-Ashley recommended mediation to both parties, who consented to participate.
The proceedings were temporarily adjourned so that the parties involved could engage in a mediation session with a probation officer who was present in court.
Upon revisiting the case, the court was told that the pair had struck an agreement.
In accordance with the terms of the mediation agreement, the prosecution offered no evidence against Plummer, and he was discharged by the judge.
“Walk good…Behave yourself,” Smith-Ashley told the accused man before allowing him to leave the courtroom.
