KINGSTON, Jamaica – Opposition leader Mark Golding says he is not expecting to be challenged following his nomination on Tuesday for the post of President of the People’s National Party (PNP) at the party’s headquarters on Old Hope Road in St Andrew.

Nominations will be open until Friday.

“I am not expecting any challenges because no-one has hinted to me that there will be any but whatever happens we will be prepared but I don’t anticipate that,” Golding told OBSERVER ONLINE.

He went on to thank the other members of the party who nominated him to the post, where if he remains unopposed, he will continue to lead the PNP.

“It is always good to know that you have the support of the comrades for the post that you hold and I just want to thank everybody who saw fit to sign this form on my behalf to nominate me for the post of president for the next two political years,” the opposition leader said.

The nomination exercise is usually done on a yearly basis for the PNP, however in his remarks, Golding stated that the constitution has been changed and nominations will be done every two years going forward.

In a message to the public, Golding sought to encourage Jamaicans that they are supported by the PNP, while being led by an “untrustworthy” Government.

“The People’s National Party has your back. We know you are going through hard times, we know you have a government which has shown itself to be untrustworthy, riddled with corruption and is seeking to undermine some of the critical institutions that have been put in place to ensure probity and honesty in public life,” Golding said.

He added that the PNP is committed to decency in government and the proper use of resources to benefit the people of Jamaica, points Golding says he plans on bringing to the table of government when the time comes.
