Man charged for shooting cabbie in robbery attempt
Police have charged a man accused of attempting to rob a taxi driver of his car, resulting in the cabbie crashing the vehicle into a utility pole.
Charged with wounding with intent, assault with intent to rob, possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition is 21-year-old Royan Baker from Smith Lane in Kingston.
Baker is the second person charged in connection with the incident, after another man, identified as Jerome Campbell, was earlier arrested.
It was reported that around 8:15 pm on December 14, 2022, the taxi driver picked up several persons in his 2014 White Toyota Probox in Cross Roads, St Andrew, and headed to downtown Kingston.
When the vehicle reached Orange Street, two men pulled a handgun and demanded the motor car. The cabbie reportedly crashed his vehicle into a Jamaica Public Service utility pole.
During the crash, the men shot the taxi driver in his right hand. They later escaped while the cabbie sought medical attention. A report was made to the police, and one man was arrested and charged.
Baker was picked up by the police on Wednesday and charged after a cautioned statement and question and answer session in the presence of his attorney.
