Johnson Smith to advance Jamaica’s int’l priorities during UN High-Level Week in NY
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, will participate in several engagements during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s High-Level Week in New York City between September 19 and 24.
The Jamaican delegation will be led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
This was announced in a statement on Sunday.
During High-Level Week, leaders from across the world gather to participate in the General Assembly, which is the main policy-making body of the UN.
The statement highlighted that Johnson Smith will use the opportunity to conduct several bilateral meetings with key development partners. She will also participate in the 46th Annual Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China; the Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Latin and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS); the Council for Foreign and Community Relations of the Caribbean Community (COFCOR) and the 14th Global Governance Group (3G) Ministerial Meeting.
“During the 77th Session, Jamaica will champion enhanced partnership towards implementing the SDGs through focus on poverty eradication measures; climate change and environmental governance; debt sustainability strategies for SIDS and middle-income developing countries as well as the advancement of women and protection of the rights of children,” Johnson Smith said.
Johnson Smith will also use the opportunity to campaign for Jamaica’s candidature to Part III of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation for the 2022-2025 cycle.
Prime Minister Holness will deliver Jamaica’s Policy Statement on September 23 during the General Debate, which is themed: “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges.”
