Jamaica College win second Champions Cup title, beating KC in final
KINGSTON – Jamaica College handed Kingston College their first loss in an ISSA Champions Cup finals on Saturday, outscoring the ‘Purples’ 2-1 in the final played at the national stadium for their second hold on the trophy.
Maquan Aldridge and Tarick Ximines scored for Jamaica College who also won the Manning Cup a week ago and will seek to get the treble on Wednesday when they take on daCosta Cup winners Clarendon College in the Olivier Shield play-off.
Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards pulled a goal back for Kingston College late in the game but that was not enough to add to titles they won in 2017 and 2019. Jamaica College were winning the Champions Cup for the second time since they did so at the inaugural staging in 2014 while Kingston College were losing for the first time.
Aldridge gave the Jamaica College the lead in the 44th minute when he dribbled into the KC area on the left side of the 18 yards box and punched a right footed shot past goalkeeper Malique Williams at his right post.
Aldridge had saved the ball from going out just around the half-way line and relaunched Jamaica College’s attack.
Jamaica College doubled their advantage early in the second half when Ximenes ran away from three Kingston College players from the centre circle and chipped the ball past the advancing goalkeeper into the right corner of the goal.
Richards came close to pulling a goal back for Kingston College in the 60th minute but he connected with a free kick in the 79th minute, beating Jamaica College’s goalkeeper from just outside the 18 yards box.
Kingston College just missed pulling level in the 88th minute when Teyshawn Mattis flashed a long range shot just inches past the Jamaica College goal and Ximines just missed his second of the day when he lobbed a ball just wide of the Kingston College goal after goalkeeper Williams left his line to try and block the striker.
