Gilbert appointed Girlz head coach for upcoming Gold Cup qualifiers
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has appointed Xavier Gilbert as head coach of the Senior Women’s National Team for the two upcoming games of the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup Qualifiers, on October 25 and 29.
Gilbert was an assistant with former coach Lorne Donaldson.
The federation said in a statement on Thursday that a squad of players has been selected for the two games against Panama and Guatemala on October 25 and 29, respectively, and the names will be released in short order.
A full technical support staff has also been put in place, the JFF said.
“Preparations are advanced for the home game on Sunday, October 29, at the National Stadium, starting at 5pm. In an effort to augment support, the JFF has decreased ticket prices; grandstand $3000, bleachers $1000, students with ID $500 to the bleachers. Children under 10 can enter the bleachers for free, with a guardian,” the statement read.
The JFF, in September, did not renew the contract for former head coach Lorne Donaldson following the Reggae Girlz’s historic feat of qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup twice— a first for any English-speaking Caribbean country.
