Ex-cop killed outside Marketplace nightclub
KINGSTON, Jamaica— An ex-policeman was shot and killed Tuesday morning in the vicinity of a popular nightclub in Marketplace on Constant Spring Road in St Andrew.
The deceased has been identified as Damion Coley, also known as ‘Panda’.
During the incident, a security guard employed by Cyclox Security was also shot and injured.
Police reports are that a lone man, armed with a firearm, exited a White Toyota Axio motor car which was parked at Marketplace entrance gate along Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10.
The man reportedly approached a security guard, who was seated at the security post and engaged him in a brief conversation then walked off.
The man, upon reaching the vicinity of a nearby store, reportedly approached Coley who exited his black Ford Explorer motor vehicle. The gunman opened fire hitting Coley all over his body.
The security guard, who was reportedly standing close by, received gunshot injuries to his chest.
The gunman then fired several shots at the entrance gate then escaped in the waiting white Toyota Axio motor car, reports said.
Both men were rushed to hospital. Coley, who is a 40-year-old former member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, died on arrival while the security guard was admitted.
There has been speculation that this attack was in reprisal for an incident in the MECA nightclub on Saturday, November 25 when several men and members of the security team were involved in a brawl. A video of the brawl has been circulating on social media since Saturday.
A police source told Observer Online that “it was too early in the investigations to ascertain whether the murder is connected to the brawl’.
