Education, road safety to take centre stage for St James Municipal Corporation on Labour Day
ST JAMES, Jamaica – The St James Municipal Corporation has selected the Salt Spring Primary and Infant, Maldon High School and the Herbert Morrison Technical/Montego Bay Community College intersection as the parish projects for Labour Day 2023 on May 23.
In making the announcement, Chairman of the St James Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Leeroy Williams said the selections were done in keeping with the theme for Labour Day which is “Plant a Tree For Life…Promoting Climate Change Mitigation, Food Security and Road Safety”.
Mayor Williams said “we have decided to plant 50 ornamental and fruit trees-20 on the grounds of the Salt Spring Primary School and 30 at the Maldon High School for Labour Day. In addition, and in keeping with the road safety aspect of Labour Day, we will be repainting the cross walk at the traffic lights at the Herbert Morrison Technical High School/Montego Bay Community College intersection. These are projects which the corporation thinks are far reaching and will play a role in the promotion of climate change mitigation and food security as well as road safety”.
He added that “the administration of Salt Spring Primary and Maldon High School have welcomed the projects and have been giving tangible support. These schools do have agricultural science as part of their curriculum and have already agreed to ensure that the trees are cared for in the best possible way. The students have been on a drive to collect plastic bottles which will be used as part of the irrigation plan for the plants”.
The trees will be donated by the Forestry Department which has been giving technical support in respect of how they should be planted and cared for.
Meanwhile, before the start of work on Labour Day, the St James Municipal Corporation will be hosting the annual floral tribute to National Hero, the Rt Excellent Samuel Sharpe. The event takes place in Sam Sharpe Square (adjacent to the statues and the Cage) starting at 8:00 am on Tuesday May 23
