DPP to review criminal charges against Geoffrey Messado
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Retired Chartered Accountant Geoffrey Messado, who is charged along with his wife Jennifer Messado, will have his case file reviewed as to the whether there is a viable case against him.
The announcement was made by his newly appointed attorney Peter Champagnie QC on Monday following his appearance in the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
Champagnie informed senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague, that he had written to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) outlining in detail why his client ought not to have been charged for any offences.
Messado is charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretense and four counts of forgery arising from a business transaction with businessman Lauriston Stewart in 2018.
According to Champagnie, he was critical of the fact that before charging his client, the police didn’t have the benefit of any sound legal advice from the DPP.
Champagnie said the Criminal Courts were misused for this purpose.
The Clerk of Courts confirmed that the DPP’s Office was written to and that additional time was necessary for an assessment of the case against his client.
The 75-year-old, who is also being represented by Neco Pagon, had his bail extended to September 15, 2022.
His wife is also to return on the same date. She is being represented by Christopher Townsend.
