Cops awaiting legal advice on Sam Sharpe Square shootout
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The St James police are awaiting feedback from their in-house legal team to determine the fate of two men who engaged in a shootout in busy Sam Sharpe Square on Tuesday July 19.
The men, one said to be a civil servant, had a traffic-related dispute that escalated. They both drew their guns and both received injuries, one to the leg and the other to the hand. Both were treated at hospital and have since been released. They are recuperating.
In videos posted on social media, they could be seen stealthily weaving their way between motor vehicles in the town centre while the sound of shots pierced the air.
The men have been questioned by the police and have provided statements about the incident.
According to acting Divisional Commander for St James, Superintendent Carlos Russell, detectives investigating the matter are still waiting on some information that will determine how they proceed.
“The detectives have sent the file to our legal team, the file was sent to them for them to give us some advice but we have not gotten that back as yet,” he told OBSERVER ONLINE.
He also said there has been no arrest or charges laid in relation to the incident. Both men are said to be licensed firearm holders.
The shootout in the heavily trafficked city centre garnered national attention with the men’s actions being roundly condemned. Chief Executive Officer of the Firearms Licensing Authority (FLA), Shane Dalling, has indicated that the FLA will be doing its own investigation.
