Campbell decries ‘two Jamaicas’
General Secretary of the People’s National Party (PNP), Dr Dayton Campbell, says it is time to break down the divide that has created two Jamaicas where the rich, powerful and connected are allowed to break the law at will and reap benefits, while the poor and downtrodden are sent to prison for the slightest of infractions.
Campbell, a former two-term member of parliament, spoke to the issue on Sunday at the PNP’s 85th annual conference inside the National Arena where he promised that the next PNP government will seek to right the injustices in the society.
“I am here to tell you today that we live in two Jamaicas” Campbell began.
“We live in a Jamaica where a hungry man pick two ackee over King’s House and dem lock him up and send him go a prison and yet still in another Jamaica you have lawmakers who a tief poor people money fi enrich themselves and yet still nobody nuh lock dem up yet,” Campbell remarked.
Continuing, he said: “We’re living in two Jamaicas; in one Jamaica dem say COVID lockdown and dem go tek a man out a him yard from under him bed and lock him up. Yet still in the next Jamaica di minister (of Government) out dere a floss and a mock no-movement day. There’s no justice in this country because we’re living in two Jamaicas”.
The general secretary told the riled-up crowd of thousands of orange-clad party supporters that “we’re living in a Jamaica where certain students can go to a good school and become anything dem want and other students are going to failing schools as the Prime Minister (Holness) labelled them when he was minister of education. We need a PNP (Government), time come now, so that your children can get a good education no matter where they go to school”.
Campbell told the crowd that “in one Jamaica, if yuh get sick yuh can get quality healthcare. In another Jamaica, yuh pregnant and go a hospital and dem put yuh pon chair until yuh drop off and dead. Time come now for a People’s National Party”.
And Campbell said that in one Jamaica “you have the opportunity to become anything you want and in another Jamaica, you have limited dreams based on where you come from, what yuh address be. But I say time come now, better must come under Mark Jefferson Golding (Opposition Leader)”.
He then went on to reel off several more examples of the two Jamaicas that exist, stating that:
“In one Jamaica, man can have a beachfront property and keep party and enjoy the beach (but) in a next Jamaica you’re banned from the beach even though you live on an island. We need a People’s National Party.
“In one Jamaica, man get farmland and all change the purpose of the land and tek it build house. In another Jamaica when a poor farmer ask for assistance instead of getting farm road dem get a donkey”.
