Bounty, Beenie deliver stellar performances at Tracks and Records’ 12th anniversary celebration
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Organisers of the special anniversary edition of Tracks Live Sessions promised a legendary performance and by all indications, the musical offering served up inside Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records on Thursday night, delivered on all counts.
With two of Jamaica’s most prolific dancehall stars on the event’s lineup, patrons anticipated a showcase that would not only send them on a nostalgic journey back to the iconic 90s era, but one that would leave them yearning for more. The latter couldn’t have rang more true as even after a fully-loaded set from Bounty Killer and a further 40-plus minute performance from the King of dancehall, Beenie Man, patrons stood inside the venue banging desks and chairs, begging for just one more song.
It was the kind of show that represented everything raw and real about dancehall music. From an expletive-laden rant from ‘Mr Cross, Angry, Miserable’ himself to the soothing freestyles of the Doctor Beenie Man. It was the perfect blend of hits and onstage antics.
But even before the night’s main acts graced the stage, Jamaica’s musical supergirl, Denyque did well to whet the appetites of the patrons inside the Marketplace venue. Delivering songs such as Proud Wifey, Knees and her hit single, Same Guy, Denyque piqued the crowd’s anticipation leaving them more than ready to receive the legendary duo of Bounty and Beenie.
Bounty Killer was the first of the pair to touch the stage. Clad in his customary all-black ensemble, Bounty Killer made it clear from the onset that he came to give of his best and was not going to settle for anything else. Less than five minutes into his set, the entertainer began calling out the venue’s engineers for the poor acoustics inside the popular eatery. Urging them to remove two speaker boxes throwing off his sound on the stage, Killer indicated that as one of dancehall’s legends, mediocre was not in his vocabulary. No action from the team inside UBT&R resulted in the entertainer kicking the speakers from the stage. “A bl**dclaat Bounty Killer diss unu hear,” he said before continuing his set.
The entertainer turned in an engaging performance that kept patrons on their toes, waiting to see or hear what Killer had next up his sleeves. But hits were the only thing he served up from thereon out. Delivering classics such as Cellular Phone, Worthless Bwoy, Stucky, So High, Living Dangerously, Sufferer, Look Into My Eyes. Fed Up and more.
“Tonight is a legendary night. Big up the legend Usain Bolt,” he said as he urged the audience to congratulate UBT&R on their 12th year in business.
While his ‘cross’ persona was no doubt on display, so was Bounty Killer’s more romantic side. He also managed to cater to the ladies by serving up his hit singles, It’s Ok and Say You Leaving. All in all, the 50-year-old veteran churned out a memorable set.
Following Bounty’s set which left patrons hyped up and ready for more music, Beenie Man served up several doses of feel good classics. His hits were exactly what the doctor ordered as it was now minutes after midnight and patrons just wanted to usher in a new day dancing and vibing to some good music.
Equipped with an enviable catalogue, the entertainer performed hits from yesteryear to present. Let Him Go, Blackboard, Romie, Old Dog, Stop Live In Di Past, Slam, Gimmie Gimmie, Dude, Tear Off Mi Garment, Back It Up, Hmm Hmm, King of the Dancehall and Girls Dem Sugar were among the songs the Doctor dished out to patrons. He had the ladies in a frenzy and their male counterparts holding on to their waistlines as they danced up a storm.
The show ended minutes before 1:00 am with patrons no doubt leaving fully satisfied. Chance The Rapper, Usain Bolt, Gary and Tina Matalon, Joe Bogdanovich and producer Skatta Burrell were among the celebrity guests who attended the event.
