16-y-o cheerleader of J’can parentage killed in New York to be buried Saturday
NEW YORK, United States — Funeral arrangements have been announced for the 16-year-old high school cheerleader Kayla Green who was stabbed to death in the city of Mount Vernon. Green is the daughter of Lavern Gordon, a Jamaican living in New York.
Family and friends will say their final farewell to Kayla Green at the Macedonia Baptist Church on Saturday, April 30.
Green was stabbed to death almost two weeks ago. The tragedy occurred shortly after the celebration for Mount Vernon High School’s state champion varsity basketball team.
A 15-year-old high school student from Mount Vernon is charged with her death.
Reports are that a vicious fight broke out among roughly a dozen teenage girls with onlookers hooting and hollering and taking cell phone videos.
Police were on hand but could do nothing to stop the violence other than try to separate the crowds.
At some point in the fracas, a 15-year-old girl allegedly stabbed Green and her friend Maniece Simpson. She was later arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter and pleaded not guilty in Westchester County Court on April 18th.
Prosecutors said the 15-year-old suspect came armed with a knife that she had shown off earlier on social media. There was a dispute as Kayla sat in a vehicle.
The office of Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah indicated the manslaughter charge may be upgraded when a grand jury reviews the case
The Green family said the suspect had a history of bullying Kayla.
