Subratie backs Atomica to win Mouttet Mile
Top-flight trainer Gary Subratie is confident that his exceptional filly, Atomica, will deliver an outstanding performance in Saturday’s lucrative Mouttet Mile race at Caymanas Park. Although Atomica was one of the favourites in last year’s event, she finished outside the top-three places.
This year, however, Atomica, owned by Don Wehby, has been enjoying an excellent season, winning her last four races comfortably with her regular jockey Dane Dawkins in the saddle.
Atomica, who romped the Jamaica Cup at nine and a half furlongs, returns to the mile chute for the first time since winning at seven furlongs in July. Though she’s a super filly, unbeaten in her last five starts, she has shown a glass chin when lined up against the best of the best.
However, Subratie expressed his confidence in Atomica‘s preparation, stating that she has worked exceptionally well in the lead-up to the race. He emphasised that Atomica is more mature and focused this year, making her ready and eager for the competition.
“I am feeling good about her because she is more mature, and she knows what she is doing now,” said Subratie. “She is working well and doing everything that we have asked of her, so I am expecting a really good run from her on Saturday.”
Subratie acknowledged that this year’s race would be different from the previous one and expressed optimism about Atomica‘s current sound condition. In addition to Atomica, Subratie has another contender in the Mouttet Mile, Duke, who finished second in last year’s race at odds of 87-1. At seven years old, Duke is the oldest horse in this year’s Mouttet Mile and will be ridden by veteran jockey Allan Maragh.
“He is a good old boy, and he is doing his thing, and hopefully, he will rise on the day, so let’s see how the race will run for him on Saturday,” Subratie commented. “He is in good condition, but he is getting older, so let’s see what he does this year.”
The Mouttet Mile, boasting a substantial purse of US$150,000, is expected to draw a large crowd of racing enthusiasts and is known for featuring top-quality thoroughbred races.
