Abbi Able extends form with another winner
ABIGAIL Able is rapidly refining her trade with every pull of the reins or flip of the whip, as seen by her performances in the saddle over the last two race meets.
Able tallied three winners over the two race meets — two winners on Monday, October 16 and one winner on Saturday, October 21.
She won aboard Joblane for trainer Richard Azan, and Heart of the Sea for trainer Jason DaCosta on Monday, while her lone winner on Saturday came aboard Sudden Flight for newly licensed trainer Gregg Fennell.
Able held Joblane in second position before taking up the running approaching the distance, easily winning the six-furlong (1,200m) call by 8¾ lengths. Joblane won ahead of Ertugrul (Dane Dawkins) and Here Comes Doc (Anthony Allen) in a time of 1:16.0 for the Maiden Special Weight contest for native-bred three-year-olds.
Able then made one move aboard Heart of the Sea over the five-straight (1,000m) course. Heart of the Sea, who was coming off a 15-month break, was skilfully handled by Able to win the five-year-old and upwards event by three parts of a length in a time of 1:02.3. Stickydon (Ramon Nepare) was second.
Able then carried her form to the next race day when she piloted Sudden Flight to victory in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($400,000-$300,000) contest at four furlongs (800m).
Able held Sudden Flight just off the pace as Sir Kel (Oshadane Robinson) and A Seh Soup (Shamaree Muir) disputed the early lead. She continued to bide her time well until crossing the dummy rails, when she sent through Sudden Flight to take the running. The five-year-old dark bay gelding came home as the winner by 2½ lengths in a time of 49.0, beating Sir Kel and Manaco (Dane Dawkins).
Able won her maiden race almost a year after beginning her professional career on September 29, 2018 atop England’s Rose, conditioned by the late Wayne DaCosta.
To date Able has won 17 races, which places her in sixth position on the female riders’ list of most wins at Caymanas Park.
Georgina Sergeon leads the standing with 59 winners, ahead of Samantha Fletcher (49 winners), Natalie Berger (25 winners), Andree Powell (22 winners), and Mellisa Ward (18 winners). Azel Cowie-Fung is seventh with 15 career winners. Tamicka Lawrence is yet to ride a winner.
