Rum For Breakfast serves up vibes
Soca revellers glistened in the morning heat while dancing up a storm at Rum For Breakfast, the first breakfast party for Bacchanal Jamaica. The event unfolded under the rising sun at Hope Zoo in St Andrew on Saturday. Attending to the crowd’s musical needs were soca grandees DJ Private Ryan, Patrick “The Hype Man” Anthony, and DJ Cruise.
The Hype Man from Trinidad proved to be the perfect personality and had great consonance with both DJs. Rum was not the only thing on the breakfast menu, as DJ Private Ryan served a comprehensive dancehall set. Among his selections were Everyone Falls In Love by Tanto Metro and Devonte, Gyal A Bubble by Konshens and Genna Bounce by Ding Dong. He also unleashed soca tracks like Bacchanal and Water by Bunji Garlin, Top Striker by Lil Natty & Thunder, Lucy by Destra, and Dip by Hypasounds.
“I’ve been coming to Jamaica to play from 2006 and it’s nice to see how soca has been growing here over the years. This is a new party so we played the soca and incorporated some of the Jamaican culture in it. I’m known for versatility so I got a really nice reception. It’s a nice crowd, nice vibe, nice food — nice everything,” Ryan told the Jamaica Observer.
Jamaican DJ Cruise kept the temperature high with his dynamic set. Patrons waved and danced along to soca favourites like Go Dung by Lil Rick, Like Ah Boss by Machael Montano, and Mon Bon Ami by Angela Hunte. DJ Cruise left no stone unturned when it came to pleasing attendees, and achieved this by incorporating hip hop, dancehall and reggae tunes in his playlist.
Michael Ammar III, a director of Bacchanal Jamaica, was also a pleased partygoer.
“We’ve been planning this for a couple of years but this year we finally got all the planning together and we are so satisfied with it. People in Jamaica love to party and have a great time and that is what soca is about, and you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning,” he said.
The next stop for Bacchanal Jamaica is Bacchanal Live, to be held this Friday at Mas Camp in St Andrew, featuring Bacchanal Queen Destra Garcia.
