Nabiyah Be plays in Daisy Jones
Brazilian-Jamaican actress Nabiyah Be plays a musician in the new Amazon Prime Video miniseries Daisy Jones & the Six.
The actress was officially attached to the highly anticipated project, which is adapted from the best-selling book of the same name, in early 2020.
Be plays singer Simone Jackson, with whom aspiring singer-songwriter Daisy Jones becomes close friends. Jones, on meeting Jackson at a party, expresses admiration for Jackson’s artistry. Jackson nudges Jones towards pursuing music on her own terms, leading Jones to a meteoric rise and subsequent fall as the frontwoman of a wildly successful band.
Jackson allows Be, who self-describes as a storyteller, to add musical textures to her filmography, after debuting as a mercenary and Erik Killmonger associate, Linda, in Marvel’s Black Panther.
Playing an entertainer in Daisy Jones & the Six gives the singer-songwriter a unique platform to exercise her musical muscles, which are undoubtedly influenced by her dad, global music icon Jimmy Cliff.
In addition to her screen and music pursuits, Be boasts noteworthy theatre credentials from award-winning productions. The actress is a Drama Desk winner (School Girls; or the African Mean Girls), who also starred off-Broadway in Tony-winner Hadestown. Be is also the first afro-Brazilian woman to win a major American theatre award.
The 10-episode miniseries explores the stories using documentary and flashback styles. The first three episodes were released by the Amazon Prime Video streaming service on March 3, with another three episodes expected on March 10. This will be followed by two additional episodes on March 17 and the final two episodes closing out the series on March 24.
Daisy Jones is played by actress Riley Keough, daughter of the recently departed Lisa Marie Presley and granddaughter of Elvis Presley.
Daisy Jones & the Six — from author Taylor Jenkins Reid — is the latest project to be adapted to screen by Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media outfit. The actress-turned-producer strategically uses the brand as an outlet to highlight women-driven stories.
The Hello Sunshine roster includes fan favourites such as Big Little Lies (Witherspoon), From Scratch (Zoe Saldana), Truth Be Told (Octavia Spencer), and Little Fires Everywhere, the latter a joint starring-producing project with Scandal actress Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street company.
