Mercenary earns Top Man status
ST Elizabeth-based dancehall deejay Mercenary is pumped up about the response to his latest single, Top Man.
“Everywhere the song drop, ah trouble! The other day is almost US$800 the selector make at a dance in St Elizabeth. The artistes dem love the song: Big up ‘The Warlord’, Bounty Killer who endorse me and endorse the song in the streets — it play eight times straight ah Weddy Weddy the other day,” said the artiste whose real name is Rodger Warren.
The song appears on the Green Dot rhythm project alongside Kip Rich, Chronic Law, Lanae, emerging star Joe Grime, and others on the Chase Mills Records imprint. The overwhelming response to Top Man has fast-tracked visuals for the project which will be released this week.
Mercenary clashed with emerging artiste Honormosity at Sting 2022 at Plantation Cove in St Ann on Boxing Day, when he gave a great account of himself.
Hailing from the parish of St Elizabeth, Mercenary grew up in Malcolm Square in the White Hill district. He attended Maggotty High and, after leaving school, relocated to James Hill in Clarendon where he formed a friendship with reggae singer Barrington Levy.
Over the years he has built up a decent underground following in his community with his incredible impressions of Merciless.
“I am trying to help his legacy live on,” he said.
Mercenary’s other songs include Zaddy, Mama I Did It, Never Come See Things, and Missing You.
