Like father, like son
Recording artiste Prince Icomstan is determined to carry on the musical legacy of his late father, reggae/dancehall pioneer Prince Jazzbo who passed away in 2013.
“My father is my greatest musical influence. He was one of the early pioneers of reggae and dancehall music. He recorded hits for many producers, including Clement “Coxson” Dodd, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Bunny “Striker” Lee. He was also a successful producer. I grew up watching him working in the studios with artistes like King Yellowman, Frankie Paul, and countless others. He is one of the true legends of Jamaican music,” Prince Icomstan told the Jamaica Observer.
“My father prepared me for this journey. I grew up in the music business, and I did my very first recording at Tuff Gong studio when I was just six years old. My father raised me to follow in his footsteps and I am going to build on his legacy,” he continued.
Three years ago Prince Icomstan travelled to Uganda, where he recorded and released his debut single, Ekkitiwo.
“I’ve been travelling to Uganda to record and perform since 2018. My fan base over there is steadily growing; the people over there have shown me a lot of love. I’ve also done shows in several European countries, including Sweden and Germany,” he said.
His single Kololo, featuring King Bryan, was released late last year on the Ujama label.
“I did this song in Uganda last year, it’s getting a lot of support. I’m currently in Jamaica promoting it, but very soon I’ll head back to Uganda for a series of shows. After I do those shows I’ll be going to Europe to work with producers in Sweden and Germany,” said Prince Icomstan.
