Dutty Rock turns 20
Sean Paul’s 2002 album, Dutty Rock, celebrated its 20th anniversary. It was also certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales of over 3,000,000 in the United States.
To mark the milestones, Sean Paul was guest of honour at an anniversary concert organised by Murray Elias and Hot 97 FM at Webster Hall in New York on November 16.
Elias, a veteran A&R man, was part of the team that made Dutty Rock a mega success. The album contains five songs that made the top 10 of Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 — Gimmie The Light, Get Busy, Like Glue, I’m Still in Love with You (with Sasha), and Baby Boy, a duet with Beyonce.
Get Busy and Baby Boy went to number one, helping Dutty Rock to over six million copies sold internationally.
“In terms of dancehall albums, it’s probably right there at number one. How many dancehall albums can you say have five top-10 records including two number ones? I don’t think any dancehall or reggae album has ever come close to that kind of crossover radio performance,” Elias noted.
